Drones and Their Applications in the Crane Industry
Let's imagine there was a bit of technology that could make our lives easier and safer and save us money and time in the crane industry; now let us tell you that there is a way, Drones, we are pretty sure every kid has probably asked for a drone for Christmas but let us assure you the drone we are talking about are not your average stocking fillers. With the technology becoming better and cheaper for drones, the results a drone can bring to a company are 10-fold. Let us give you an example; back in 2021, we witnessed a German company called Hartinger running 2 LR11000's and 2 LTR11200s all on wind farm work the 2 LRs were working high up on hillsides during winter and were very prone to severe icing on the rope and shelves, in the days before drones the operator would need to hook the super lift on and boom the crane down, this could add 2-3 hours to his day not to mention the fuel and wear and tear on the crane, but Hartinger was a visionary and as most germans like to think outside the box he brought a drone for each of his big cranes on windfarms and had his operators trained to use them, this small investment has saved the client and company many hours and much fuel over the project.
