Origin Story

So, by now, you have already guessed or heard the owner and creator of Crane Hub is non other than Tristam Mayes, based in the UK with 25+ years in the industry and known for a specific BBC TV show, but what you probably do not know is how did he come up with the name and the logo?? Firstly, you need to get your minds out of the gutter, while sitting at home just after being off-hired from a project in Spain at the start of covid he found himself sat in the front room one evening browsing the well-known crane publications and watching one of his favorite YouTube channels, Plane Hub TV. That night, 5th October 2020, Crane Hub was born, initially only on Instagram to share cool photos and funny crane-related memes. The whole concept became popular very fast, putting it down to a mixture of the logo and the incredible images. The Crane Hub brand then moved onto LinkedIn, where it started to take off so fast that Crane Hub began to to get noticed by some of the largest brands in the industry, and from there, began to work with them to give them more exposure and help create content. One of the missing things in the crane industry was the lack of good content. After watching the great stuff and the likes of Mark Anthony from Demolition News were producing, Tristam realized this is what the crane industry was missing and that the old and stuffy publications hadn't caught on with; the age of the physical magazine was dead. The new age of marketing for the crane industry was born. Fast forward to 2024, and Crane Hub has become a household name within the industry all over the globe, with over 100K loyal followers. There isn't a crane company that hasn't seen the Crane Hub brand, but this wasn't enough, and Tristam wanted to bring the news and content further; he needed a team with the same vision and goals as him. That is where the team at CraneLife comes in. Clint and Meagan, both veterans in the world of marketing, had the same passion and determination to want a change in the way the crane industry does its news and content.

Mental Health Awareness

Written By: Jennifer Gabel

The crane industry is often lauded for its strength, resilience, and critical role in infrastructure development. However, beneath the towering cranes and bustling job sites lies a silent struggle that affects the very backbone of this industry – the mental health of its workforce.

.

Understanding the Scope Mental health challenges in the crane industry are multifaceted. Workers often face high- pressure environments, long hours, and isolation while operating heavy machinery. The physical dangers are well-documented, but the psychological toll remains largely overlooked. This oversight can have profound implications for both individual well-being and overall workforce development. The Skilled Labor Gap In nearly every meeting over the past decade, the crane industry has highlighted the need to address the skilled workforce issue: namely, we’re losing more talented people than we are gaining. To address this, industry leaders have been hosting or attending career-oriented events to raise awareness of the industry. Presenters and spokespeople have especially emphasized the great pay without the need for student loan debt. However,, does this address the root cause of the skilled labor gap? Consider what’s happening in South Korea. The death rate exceeds the birth rate, posing great economic risk. To correct this, the government has offered financial incentives and benefits to encourage its citizens to have children. The problem? It’s not working, likely because it’s not addressing the root cause of why South Korean women are choosing not to marry or have children. There’s a movement of South Korean women who are boycotting their countrymen because they don’t like how they are treated. Financial incentives and benefits don’t address poor treatment or inequality. Women don’t want to be with men who don’t treat them well, period. The pay and benefits don’t matter compared to their actual lived experience.

THE SILENT STRUGGLE – MENTAL HEALTH IN THE CRANE INDUSTRY AND ITS IMPACT ON WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT Likewise, in the crane industry, young people were raised to expect better than what their parents’ experiences were. Yet now, the same generation who raised them bemoans a lack of work ethic, simply because young workers are demanding better for themselves, as they were taught. This is especially noticeable when it comes to the aspects of work impacting mental health, such as work/life balance and how they are treated by their employers. Young workers don’t want to be with a company that doesn’t treat them well, period. The pay and benefits don’t matter compared to their actual lived experience. Here’s How Industry Leaders Can Improve Mental Health and the Skilled Labor Gap at the Same Time! Recognize Impact on Workforce Development Mental health issues not only affect individual workers but also have a ripple effect on workforce development. 1. Productivity Loss: Mental health problems can lead to decreased productivity. Workers dealing with anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues may find it difficult to concentrate, leading to mistakes and accidents. 2. High Turnover Rates: The strain of untreated mental health problems can result in higher turnover rates. Companies lose valuable, experienced workers and face the cost of recruiting and training new employees. 3. Safety Concerns: Mental health directly impacts safety. Stressed or distracted workers are more likely to be involved in accidents, which can have serious or even fatal consequences. 4. Team Dynamics: A workforce struggling with mental health issues can see deteriorating team dynamics. Communication breakdowns, conflicts, and a lack of cohesion can become common, affecting overall project outcomes. 5. Lack of Diversity: Whether in a gene pool or a stock portfolio, lack of diversity leads to major problems. Women and minorities are underrepresented in the crane industry due to factors such as not feeling welcome or safe.

Eliminate the Stigma of Mental Health

One of the biggest hurdles in addressing mental health in the crane industry is the stigma attached to it. In a field where toughness and stoicism are valued, admitting to mental health struggles can be seen as a sign of weakness. This stigma prevents many workers from seeking the help they need, leading to a cycle of suffering in silence. Strategies for improvement include: 1. Education and Awareness: Companies should invest in mental health education and awareness programs. Workshops and training sessions can help reduce stigma and encourage workers to seek help. For example, I founded Construct Your Health in 2021 to educate not only workers but employers on the importance of health, both physical and mental. After every single workshop, at least one person in attendance has reached out to express gratitude or for further resources. These are people who’ve acknowledged their struggles with depression, anxiety, addiction, or suicidal thoughts, either with themselves or someone they love.

2. Support Systems: Establishing strong support systems is crucial. This includes access to mental health professionals, peer support groups, and helplines.

3. Work-Life Balance: Promoting a healthy work-life balance can significantly impact mental health. Encouraging breaks, manageable shifts, and time off without judgment or consequences can help workers recharge and reduce stress. 4. Open Communication: Creating an environment where workers feel comfortable discussing their mental health without being judged is essential. It must be genuine, which means management must lead by example, showing empathy and understanding. This may require resources to help leadership dismantle their own internalized beliefs around mental health. 5. Proactive Policies: Implementing proactive policies, such as regular mental health check-ins and providing resources for mental wellness, can make a significant difference. Adopting progressive family leave policies will not only encourage more women into the industry, but it also sends the message that the employer cares about them as a human being.

The crane industry stands on the shoulders of its workers. Recognizing and addressing mental health challenges is not just a moral obligation but a visionary move to ensure the industry’s future growth and development. By fostering a culture of understanding and support, we can elevate not only our projects but also the lives of those who build them.

Personal Opinion

Crane Hub had the opportunity to interview Ingo Schiller about his perspective on the future of cranes in the construction industry. Ingo has had a storied career in the industry and continues to hold a trusted and respected opinion. We at Crane Hub valued the opportunity to speak with Ingo and share his thoughts with our readers his thoughts on the future and advancements within the Crane & Lift sector. Crane Hub asked Ingo to reflect on the most significant advancement in the industry over the past two decades. Schiller stated “The advancement of certifications for operators, riggers & signal people through the NCCCO has been the broadest, biggest positive influence on the industry as a whole. While there have been technical advancements within equipment, capacities & capabilities the biggest improvement of the industry at large has been the certification to educate the workforce to execute their jobs correctly & safely.” Crane Hub also asked Ingo for his insights on the advancements we can expect to see in the crane industry in the near future. “User interfaces inside the cranes and the way the information is presented to the operator. With advancements of the computers in the cranes, the cameras for the operators to utilize and the opportunity to monitor all the systems. Manufacturers will be putting more technology into these systems for the operators, riggers and stakeholders on lifting projects is beneficial and not a distraction, so the correct information is being presented at the optimal time.” Crane Hub asked Ingo about his opinion on the potential for more sustainable options from manufacturers in the future. “The manufacturers and the construction industry are working on the technology & exploring the alternatives but it is important that the actions taken by the manufacturers are significant and not just ceremonial.” Ingo also noted “ It is very important to have electric cranes and the manufacturers need to keep working on this to make the technology increasingly better and less problematic.”

Chapeau la France!

Five years after the fire Liebherr mobile cranes aiding in the reconstruction of Notre-Dame

They are regarded as the embodiment of demonic power: the ghostly chimeras and water-spouting mythical creatures on the towers of Notre-Dame de Paris. Legend has it that these grotesque figures protect the city and its cathedral on the Île de la Cité in the heart of the French metropolis. However, the stone sentinels were evidently powerless during the major fire on 15 April 2019, which destroyed large parts of the 800-year-old sacred building. The entire roof was consumed and the crossing tower on top of it collapsed, burning, into the nave, taking the supporting stone vaults with it. A short time later, reconstruction of the cathedral began with a vengeance. And at the end, a Liebherr crane completed the installation of the ornate crossing tower on the new roof truss. Our mobile cranes were involved in the reconstruction of Notre-Dame from the outset and until the reopening of the cathedral at the end of 2024.

Crane Hub Magazine | 26

COVER STORY

In a national tour de force, France has achieved an almost unbelievable feat by resurrecting this historic cathedral in its capital city. This endeavour was initiated by the French President Emmanuel Macron, who, unlike the aforementioned mythical creatures, is not endowed with mythical power, but with plenty of worldly power. He declared the French to be a “nation of master builders” and made the reconstruction project a top priority: “Cinq ans!” Five years! This was the slogan that Macron proclaimed to the Republic and the world the day after the fire. A bold promise. France’s absolute will to perform the much-cited “miracle of rebirth” of Notre- Dame was irrepressible. And the planning of this miracle was, quite literally, meticulous. Material experts, historians and luminaries from the world of research, as well as the country’s best engineers, were happy to be recruited. The most knowledgeable craftsmen and skilled artisans of the “Grande Nation” were hired, and the straightest oaks were sought, found and felled in French forests. One superlative followed another.

Liebherr crane rescues apostle

If truth be told, Liebherr’s engineers are more than a little proud that the mobile cranes used in this unique project bear the Liebherr logo. They were important tools in the reconstruction of Notre- Dame. As early as December after the fire, two Liebherr cranes from the French company Montagrues arrived to erect the huge construction crane that has characterised the scene on the Île de la Cité ever since. And by the way, just a few days before the fire, a Liebherr mobile construction crane from Foselev’s fleet had lifted the mighty figures of the apostles and evangelists off the church roof for the planned restoration work – and thus ultimately saved them. Since spring 2022, the crane and transport company Dartus Levage has been responsible for mobile crane operations at the construction site. In addition to several smaller machines, two large LTM 1350-6.1s have extended their enormous lattice masts across the capital’s skyline. They supply the workers and scaffolders with materials over enormous radii of up to 80 metres and up to great heights. While wooden beams, blocks of stone or machines are typically suspended from the crane hooks, stone gargoyles, cross flowers and even statues are also transported back to their original places by air.

“La Flèche” for Christmas

The greatest lifting heights were required for the construction of the wooden crossing tower, which they rather elegantly call “La Flèche” here. It is the French word for arrow. The ornate spire reaches a proud 96 metres in height, towering far above the two stone towers of the church building. The mobile crane on the north side of the cathedral was equipped with a 78-metre-long luffing lattice jib for the assembly of its upper sections. Down on the ground, the men from Dartus went about their work. One of them is Christophe. He alternates with a colleague in the cab of the LTM 1350-6.1. On the south side, between the cathedral and the river, they and their crane are constantly ready to perform jobs for the craftspeople and scaffolders.

Crane Hub Magazine | 27

“The cramped conditions are a major challenge” If you count the crane drivers and their “chefs de manœuvre”, who are responsible for fastening the loads and manoeuvring the cranes safely on the ground, there are up to 14 Dartus Levage employees on the site on some days. “They are all needed,” explains company boss Victor Dartus, who travelled to Paris to install the spire. “We have to cover the staffing requirements from seven in the morning to nine in the evening in two shifts. After all, we used a total of seven mobile cranes here over the entire construction period. All from Liebherr, by the way. In addition to the two large LTM 1350-6.1s on either side of the cathedral, the four- axle 120-tonners were and are our most important machines here. They are perfect for this construction site because they can be moved very quickly and set up almost anywhere around the building. The variable supports and adjustable ballast make them extremely flexible.”

Crane Hub Magazine | 28

“NEVERTHELESS,” CONTINUES DARTUS, “THE SPATIAL CONDITIONS HERE ARE AN ABSOLUTE CHALLENGE FOR EVERYONE. THE COMPLEX AND SIMULTANEOUS INTERACTIONS OF SO MANY PARTICIPANTS ON THE CRAMPED CONSTRUCTION SITE RESULT IN MAJOR RESTRICTIONS IN TERMS OF THE CRANE PARKING AREAS. IT’S ALWAYS DIFFICULT TO FIND OPTIMAL SOLUTIONS. SETTING UP THE CRANES OR CHANGING THE JIB CONFIGURATION WITHOUT DISRUPTING THE CONSTRUCTION WORK IS OFTEN VERY COMPLICATED. BUT WHEN WE STARTED HERE, EVERYTHING WAS MUCH MORE DIFFICULT BECAUSE THE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WERE VERY STRICT.”

Crane Hub Magazine | 29

Completion! Liebherr cranes from Dartus Levage have been on display around Notre-Dame until November. The reopening of the cathedral with international guests took place in December.

Climate neutrality is a strategic objective that requires a comprehensive investment plan and a clear roadmap. Achieving climate neutrality by 2050 is technologically achievable. To ensure a cost-effective transformation for all stakeholders, it is essential to establish new legal frameworks and structures that support affordable construction. It is imperative for policymakers, builders, and industry leaders to collaborate on a cohesive roadmap, as planning certainty fosters a willingness to invest. Construction machines, known for their high performance, necessitate customized drive concepts that align with both the machine type and the specific infrastructure of a construction site. It is essential to explore various energy sources, including hydrogen, eFuels, and battery electrics, to ensure adaptability. The pivotal inquiry remains how energy is delivered to the construction site and efficiently utilized within the machines. The responses to this inquiry are diverse and multifaceted.

Networked construction encompasses the integration of machines, processes, and personnel. The pressing challenges of environmental protection and workforce shortages are driving the digitization of machinery and the advancement of automated and alternative construction techniques. These innovations aim to enhance efficiency, safety, and user-friendliness across all construction sectors. Furthermore, effective data management and serial construction are pivotal components of networked construction. Sustainable construction focuses on minimizing the carbon footprint, conserving resources, and promoting a circular economy. The selection of building materials plays a crucial role in achieving significant reductions in carbon emissions. By utilizing recycled materials, innovative concrete mixes, and alternative building materials within a robust circular economy framework, we can effectively conserve resources and mitigate carbon dioxide emissions. Implementing careful demolition techniques alongside up-cycling machinery will aim to eliminate construction waste and disposal issues to the greatest extent possible.

Perspectives from Women in the Crane & Lift Industry By: Meagan Wood I had the honor and the opportunity to interview a diverse group of women in our industry that gave unique perspectives on their experiences they have had working within the crane & lift sector. I interviewed women that all had different jobs & backgrounds and asked them all the same questions. The common thread they all had in in their responses was about how there needs to be more exposure to the industry and their common passion & fascination with cranes. It is an honor to share what these bright & determined women have to say on what they have had to overcome, the opportunities they see and the strength they all have.

SPOTLIGHT

What positive impact are you contributing to the industry or the greater construction community? I am deeply committed to promoting apprenticeship programs and helping to develop the next generation of skilled operators in the industry. By working closely with the union, I ensure that our apprentices receive the proper training and mentorship they need to succeed. Additionally, I believe in creating a family-oriented atmosphere for our employees, where communication and collaboration are encouraged. This approach has been a major factor in my success, as it fosters a strong sense of trust and support from our staff. This positive work environment not only helps to retain talent but also empowers our team to take pride in their work and contribute to the success of every project. - Tanya Gairdner Where do you see opportunities for more women to become involved in the industry? There are no limits in this business for women, the opportunities are extensive and worldwide. From operating, to operations, ownership, and everything in-between, hard work truly does pay off- so go after it! The best crane operator I have ever seen in action is a woman and her co-workers past and present will tell you the same about her. In my time in construction women are now more involved at higher levels than ever. It’s not unnatural to see multiple women in high-level meetings and positions; there’s something to be said walking into a room or on a jobsite and making that initial eye contact with another successful female, it’s pretty empowering. - Jen Mutas

What advice would you give to women entering into the industry? The best advice I can give to women entering the trades industry is to believe in yourself, stay resilient, and never be afraid to push past your comfort zone. You’ll face challenges—both physical and mental—but those obstacles will only make you stronger if you stay determined. - Morgan Bosch

Perspectives

Why did you choose to have a career within the Crane & Lift sector? I’m one of the lucky ones who fell into the industry by accident. My passion is in organizational leadership and building teams. I was hired by my current employer, Green Mountain Lion Corp., a woman-owned boutique executive management recruiting firm that specializes in the construction machinery space. I had no idea how quickly and deeply I would fall in love with the industry, but with the infectious leadership and excitement from our President, Kristie Stern, it was difficult not to share in the enthusiasm. Now, my family slows down when we drive past construction sites to see what equipment they’re using. I find the complexities of the crane & lift sector particularly fascinating. - Kate Ziek Where do you see opportunities for more women to become involved in the industry? I see vast opportunities for women to get involved in every aspect of the industry. The range of positions is diverse, depending on interests, skills, experience, and education. Women are already thriving in roles such as crane operators, truck drivers, and in fields like operations, engineering, maintenance, safety, finance, management, sales, IT, marketing, and human resources — the sky’s the limit! - Tanya Gairdner What advice would you give to women entering into the industry? Embrace every experience and use everything as a lesson. The toughest situation in my career turned out to be my greatest lesson and the biggest turning point towards success. Important to note- I had to ask for help to solve my problem, which was very hard for me to do. However, once the ball was rolling things became crystal clear and I was back on track, eventually becoming stronger and more successful than before. You will not have a good day every day, and that’s ok. Build a strong career support system and always remember tomorrow brings a new day. Keep moving forward! - Jen Mutas What has been your biggest struggle being a women in our industry? One of my biggest struggles as a woman in the crane industry has been breaking down barriers and overcoming skepticism. Even with years of experience, I still face assumptions about my abilities—especially when clients or new coworkers see a woman operating heavy equipment. It can be exhausting to constantly prove that I’m just as capable and skilled as anyone else. I’ve learned to let my work speak for itself and perform at the highest level every day, knowing that earning respect is an ongoing process in this industry. - Morgan Bosch

Where do you see opportunities for more women to become involved in the industry? I believe there are great opportunities for women in the crane industry, but the biggest opportunity, in my opinion lies with the younger generation. Teaching young girls how to build the skills they need to be successful in a construction environment. Many women have more book knowledge versus the understanding of how to use a wrench or how an engine works. Most boys are taught this from a young age, whereas women often are trying to catch up at a much older age when they decide to enter the field. - Becca Kroslak What advice would you give to women entering into the industry? My advice to would be to take in as much information as possible and if your stuck always ask for help, the lads have always helped me and gave me support when it’s needed. -Kelsey Binding What positive impact are you contributing to the industry or the greater construction community? We consider ourselves the professional matchmakers of the equipment industry. We focus on identifying and qualifying candidates to match not just the job, but also the company culture. We allow our clients to focus on what makes them profitable, while we assist in finding their next team member to fill a critical need that allows them to hit the ground running. We partner closely with both clients and candidates to align on industry trends, candidate pool expectations, and opportunity pipelines for strong partnerships. We are members of various industry associations, (AEM, SC&RA, AED, NAPA), which allows us to have our finger on the pulse of the industry and identify where we can bolster the industry and provide the most value. I serve on the AEM Workforce Development Committee, where I’m able to hear the unique challenges and opportunities from OEMs and offer 3rd party insights, ultimately, working on how we can overcome these obstacles together. - Kate Ziek Women in the Crane & Lift Industry
